In 1992, Dr Gary Chapman wrote a book titled The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate. And for over 25 years, it has helped people better understand one another.
He identified five ways in which we like to give and receive love, outlining how better communication between couples can be achieved by using the love language each best understands and resonates with.

WORDS
Words of affirmation. This person likes to hear loving words, declarations of support, encouraging statements and kind compliments.
TOUCH
Physical touch. For this person, connection comes through connecting physically – hand holding, hugs, kisses and lovemaking.
GIFTS
Receiving gifts. Not necessarily materialistic, this person likes to receive thoughtful items and tokens of sentiment.
SERVICE
Acts of service. For this person, actions speak louder than words – tasks undertaken for them without any expectations in return.
TIME
Quality time. This person is drawn to spending uninterrupted, undivided time with their loved ones.
